Chews Wisely: Keeping Your Dog Safe from Choking Hazards

Today is National Pet Choking Prevention Day, a reminder of just how important it is to be aware of the everyday items that can pose a serious risk to our dogs. While choking incidents are rare, they can happen quickly — and being prepared can make all the difference.

At Yuppie Puppie, safety is one of our top priorities. Whether your pup is here for daycare, grooming, boarding, or training, we’re always mindful of the toys and chews we provide. And we want you to feel confident doing the same at home.

Common Choking Hazards

Here are a few items we reocmmend keeping an eye on:

  • Small or broken toys: toys that are too small or have come apart can quickly become a choking hazard.

  • Rawhides and bones: These can break into sharp or slippery pieces that are easy to swallow.

  • Hard treats and chews: Some treats can be difficult to break down and may pose a risk if swallowed whole.

  • Dropped food or household items: Grapes, corn cobs, socks, hair ties, or bottle caps may seem harmless, but can cause serious trouble if ingested.

  • Balls that are too small: Make sure any balls or fetch toys are appropriately sized for your dog’s breed and bite.

Signs Your Dog May Be Choking

Choking can come on fast. If your dog is gagging, coughing, pawing at their mouth, drooling excessively, or showing signs of distress, they may be in trouble. More severe symptoms can include blue gums or tongue, and in extreme cases, collapse.

How to Prevent Choking

  • Choose toys and chews wisely: Always select items that are appropriate for your dog’s size and chewing style. If a toy starts to break down or gets too small, it’s time to retire it.

  • Supervise chewing sessions: Especially with new chews or high-value treats, keep a close eye on your dog while they enjoy it.

  • Clean up potential hazards: Make a habit of keeping small objects and dropped food off the floor and out of reach.

  • Learn basic pet first aid: Consider taking a course in pet CPR and first aid. It’s knowledge you’ll be grateful to have in an emergency.

Our Commitment to Safety

At Yuppie Puppie, we believe safe play is smart play. All toys used in our daycare are chosen for durability and size, and we regularly inspect them for wear. We’re happy to answer any questions about the safest treats and toys for your dog — we know every pup is different, and we’re here to help you make the best choice for yours.

Take a moment today to check your pup’s toy bin and treat shelf. Toss anything that’s questionable and take pride in knowing you’re helping your dog stay safe, happy, and healthy.
